Abstract

The final substantive chapter, concerns “Community.” Included in this chapter are accounts of the views of contemporary Canadian Orangemen on gender, in-group solidarity, community outreach, parades and marching, and respectability. McAuley and Nesbitt-Larking explore these themes throughout this chapter and address four inter-related questions of the community for today’s Canadian Orangemen. First, where have they come from? What are their traditions and their roots? Second, who are they? What is their community, and how do they sustain their values and solidarity among themselves? Third, where are they going? How open are they toward others, and are they recruiting younger members? Finally, how do they tell their story? How do they communicate their message to others within and beyond the Orange Order?
