Abstract
Chapter 3 offers a broad account of the propagation of media that followed the so-called Portuguese expansion and the process of colonial domination. The chapter connects the spread of liberal ideas in the nineteenth century, encouraged by the invasion of Portugal by Napoleonic troops, with the emergence of an independent colonial press, produced both by those born in the colonies and by the Portuguese located in those distant lands—including Brazil. This was a colonial Portuguese-speaking press, which translated into Portuguese the original point of view of the natives or of those adjusted to or identified with the colony.
