Abstract
It is necessary for institutions to have a formal approach to overseeing the design and delivery of online programs. The selected approach will fall on the spectrum between centralized and decentralized. This chapter will explore the differences between centralized and decentralized approaches, best practices, and necessary components that need to be considered, regardless of the method selected. Whether centralized or decentralized, all institutions offering online learning need to consider the following areas, related to best practices: technology, faculty, administration, curriculum, and support services. From there, establishing guidelines and standards are explored, and suggestions for implementation are considered.
