Abstract

This chapter continues the theme of how we “see” posters, this time from the perspective of visual literacy and looking. Again looking from individual and collective perspectives, we look at visual literacy and visual competence and how these either encourage or discourage us to engage with what we see. By presenting “story” and “core” layout alternatives, the chapter encourages presenters to steer away from the usual “abstract writ large” type of posters and to offer viewers something more exciting to look at, without having to master any particular design knowledge or skills.
