Abstract

In “Contesting Silence, Reclaiming Historical Memory in Contemporary Spain,” Aragüete-Toribio assesses the judicial and institutional landscape that surrounds the memory of the Civil War in present day Spain. Paying special attention to claims from grassroots collectives against the state’s lukewarm reparation of victims of Francoist repression, the author considers how novel human rights discourses in the country shape the aspirations and actions enveloped by their activist campaigns. These endeavours, the author argues, redefine the ways in which the history of the conflict is perceived, memorialized and used through emerging legal, scientific and historical registers connected to the search for and recovery of the corpse of Republicans missing and executed during and after the war.
