Abstract
The recent Hungarian case in public utility service provision is about the influence of market by direct political actions rather than realisation of a market-based regulatory programme. The purpose of the government in the 2010s is to restrict foreign private monopolies emerged after privatisation. The author evaluates the realisation of this programme by scrutinising the motives and reasons of measurements. The view is from the side of the most important basic tool, such as administrative price cutting. There are abundant quantitative primary data on public opinion about consumers’ far reaching expectations from this policy. Contextual issues are also important, because national-value orientation and direct interest motivation have considerable impact.
The empirical research was also sponsored by the project OTKA [National Scientific Research Fund, Hungary] K 101147, City Governance in Middle Sized Towns and Urban Areas, led by the author.
