Abstract
Educational theory derives from a number of disparate scientific disciplines, which provides an opportunity for rich dialogue. However, in a time of austerity and reduction in the budgets of many educational organisations, it has refocussed research into educational activities which provide real and measurable benefits to students. With a focus on medical education, this paper outlines the position that mental workload theory provides both a unifying theory and the methodology required to evaluate the learning of students.
