Abstract

Approximately 10% of all haematologic cancers are related to Multiple Myeloma (MM). Whole-body 18F-FDG PETCT is an extremely useful imaging tool for the assessment of patients with MM. The software developed in this research performs a pixel thresholding based segmentation and a semi-automatic placement of regions of interest at key anatomical sites for the assessment of bone marrow metabolism. The proposed method offers an automated and objective approach for evaluation of PET scans of patients with MM. This method has also allowed for quantitative statistical comparisons between patients with normal bone marrow metabolism and those with myeloma to be performed, establishing a baseline against which future scans may be referenced. In cases where the suspicion of myeloma exists, the tools developed in this research may be used to support the diagnosis of the disease, and could potentially be useful in staging of the disease in cases positive for myeloma, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance or smouldering myeloma.
