Abstract

Pediatric eyelid tumors are uncommon in children as opposed to benign eyelid tumors. Hence, a lot of what we know about the principles of diagnosis and treatment of these lesions has to be extrapolated from our knowledge about eyelid malignancies of the adult population. Rather than occurring as isolated lesions, most pediatric malignant eyelid tumors occur as a manifestation of a systemic disease or within a clinically recognizable premalignant lesion that has a defined or well-known risk for malignant transformation. Most children (defined here as those individuals age 18 years and under) with a malignant lesion of the eyelid will require additional subspecialty referral to ensure adequate investigation for and treatment of any systemic manifestations of an underlying disease.
