Abstract

This chapter reflects on the assumptions underlying current practices in the use of informetric indicators in research assessment, and proposes a series of alternative approaches, indicating their pros and cons. The proposals relate to: measurement of communication effectiveness; new indicators of multi-dimensional research output and impact; the definition and application of minimum performance standards; academic policies towards the world university ranking systems; and an alternative approach to performance-based funding.
