Abstract
A 46-year-old male with a history of traumatic ankle injury 30 years ago presents to the office with worsening ankle pain over the past year. He is found to have post-traumatic tibiotalar arthritis refractory to conservative treatment. Given the patient’s young age and high activity level, tibiotalar arthrodesis was chosen because of the procedure’s ability to improve pain and maintain mobility through adjacent joints. This case discusses tibiotalar arthrodesis using medial and lateral approaches to the ankle and fixation with cannulated cancellous screws. This procedure has high success rates for treating end stage tibiotalar arthritis and has low rates of reoperation.
