Abstract

The acceptability and accessibility of surrogate motherhood to support the involuntary childless whilst being reimbursed to build a family depend upon the cultural and social network, local attitudes as well as the institutional values, endorsements and responsibilities, and these are noted in this chapter. Also covered are issues of equity in access to surrogate motherhood and the social contexts necessary to accept non-traditional families. Human-rights-based multidisciplinary/multiprofessional treatments of the parties involved in—and resulting from—these arrangements are increasingly critical for the child’s future welfare. Finally, the importance of counselling is emphasised to ensure the long-term welfare of the triads before, during and after these difficult decisions about surrogacy are made and are accounted for.
