Abstract

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between a longitudinal shock during braking of a train and ride comfort. The authors attempted to develop a method of quantitatively evaluating the main braking patterns envisaged (40 in total) with a view to establishing an evaluation method that would be readily applicable to actual driving and control. A multiple regression model and a multinomial logistic model were derived for a one-step braking process and the usefulness of same was confirmed on the basis of the high value of the coefficient of determination. Based on the model formula/formulae derived and the results of evaluating the braking patterns, it was possible to evaluate the 40 braking patterns by means of an ordinal scale. Train driving/control is evaluated with respect to various aspects from various perspectives, but the development of a method of evaluating ride comfort, which was partly unsolved, means that it is now possible to comprehensively evaluate train driving. Future application of the evaluation method in improving train-driving skills and in automatic train-driving controls can be expected.
