Abstract

This introductory chapter presents the topic of book: the understanding of leisure as a concept and the constitution of leisure in practice by a group of diverse women who work full-time jobs in one of Germany’s many multicultural, midrange cities. (In Germany cities with around 100.000–500.000 are considered midrange cities, meaning they are not small nor big cities.) In order to place the book in the context of existing literature, this chapter offers a brief overview of existing literature on leisure. This introduction is divided according to different criteria that are relevant for the empirical data in chapters that follow: lifestyle and leisure, gender, ethnicity, and migration. It also presents the methods applied during fieldwork as well as the group of participants.
