Television Searches Deeper and Farther: Remember, My Darling
The serial Remember, My Darling (2006–2008) recreates the 1960, 1971 and 1980 coups as part of a love affair between young members of two families that were political rivals. The serial foregrounds a child’s paternity as an issue interwoven with questions about the nation’s identity. Tragedies like the execution of youth heroes, the shootings on May Day 1977, and massacres in Maraş and Çorum are marked as national traumas. In the final episode, the screenwriter addresses the audience with a plea for viewing in history a map to present-day Turkey (i.e. its turn to conservative policies and a neo-liberal economy). Remember, My Darling compares and contrasts fictional and historical narratives, while underscoring social memory.
