Abstract
This chapter identifies and explores the implications of significant dramaturgical shifts in the work of Tom Mac Intyre, one of Ireland’s most controversial playwrights for the national stage. Paying particular attention to the politics of identity and developments in Irish theatre and the artistic vision of the Abbey Theatre since the 1990s, Marie Kelly offers insights into parallel developments in Mac Intyre’s form and style, which experimented almost exclusively with Theatre of the Image in the 1980s but which paid increased attention to the power of the spoken word in the following decades.
