Abstract

A class of thin shells that:

  1. (i)

    possess low resistance to stretching and zero-order flexural rigidity;

  2. (ii)

    undergo finite deformations;

  3. (iii)

    withstand only stretch but not compression forces;

  4. (iv)

    its actual configuration is defined by internal/external loads per unit surface area only;

  5. (v)

    its stress-strain states are fully described by in-plane membrane forces per unit length,

The secret of getting ahead is getting started.
