Abstract
This chapter seeks to understand how Serbian and Croatian parties’ relations with European transnational party federations, EU institutions and ambassadors affected their attitudes towards the EU. Parties’ transnational linkages generally did not prove to have a direct effect on their stances. However, European transnational party federations seem to have an indirect impact on parties that were at an early stage of ideological transformation towards becoming credible pro-European parties, after a long legacy of Eurosceptic and nationalist politics. They strongly aspired to join one of the European party federations in order to obtain European legitimacy but also government participation, given the significant veto power of these external actors in EU candidate states.
