Abstract

In this chapter, the basic principles of ultraviolet (UV)/visible satellite remote sensing of tropospheric pollutants are reviewed. Results from satellite observations over Asia are discussed, focusing on NO2 and SO2 retrievals. The discussion covers measurements of the spatial distribution of pollutants, their temporal evolution on regional and local scales, and the inversion of emission estimates. Finally, the link between satellite pollution measurements and haze events in Asia is briefly discussed.
