Abstract

Eosinophilic Esophagitis is a relatively new disease with diagnostic criteria first established in 2007. Clinical experiences and an increasing number of research studies support that EoE is a chronic inflammatory esophageal disease of allergic etiology that leads to symptoms in adults characterized by dysphagia and food impaction and in children by reflux-like symptoms and feeding difficulties. Treatments include dietary restriction of offending allergens, swallowed topical steroids, or esophageal dilation. The natural history of EoE remains undefined except that complications such as food impaction and esophageal stricture occur in some patients.
