Abstract

This chapter offers a detailed account of the emergence of a more systematically organized homosexual activism in late communist Poland. After presenting the broader political and social context of Poland under communism and introducing some homosexuality-related issues in the country before 1980, Szulc devotes the rest of the chapter to discuss early Polish homosexual groups: Etap, Filo and Warsaw Homosexual Movement. Particularly, he points to their transnational origins, greater mobilization after the police’s intensified harassment of homosexuals—especially during the 1985 Operation Hyacinth—as well as their first demands for official recognition, framed within the discourses of HIV and AIDS.
