Museums from São Paulo and Railroad Memory

Abstract

This chapter aims at discussing Brazilian railway heritage, taking into account the São Paulo State as a study case. Throughout its history, São Paulo’s railway heritage has experienced countless setbacks as the same way its memory has, except for certain initiatives, suffering since 1950s, when the country chose to prioritize the road transport matrix, which resulted in a continuous process of scrapping. In the last decade, such abandoning picture has been reversed, through blogs, websites, and almost two hundred theses and dissertations on this issue in São Paulo State public universities. From this discussion, we give prominence to the railroad memory reinvention by railroad museums as a social process which enhances the identity and cultural heritage turned into an inheritance, not only from its melancholic and nostalgic dimension of a past which will not return but mainly as a crucial component to build the future.
