Abstract

Omach provides a summary of reconstruction and state-building efforts in Uganda after decades of political instability as well as Uganda’s intervention in conflicts in the Great Lakes region. This chapter shows how the reconstruction of the state has been accompanied by Uganda’s alignment with the geostrategic interests of Western powers in the region. By endearing himself to the positions of major Western donors, Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni has intervened as a peacemaker in regional conflicts. This chapter also suggests that regional interventions have enabled Museveni to postpone confronting the governance and security challenges that continue to characterise Uganda’s political landscape.
