Abstract

The traditional scholarship on emigration has identified the existence of emigrant clusters in the British Isles. Yet, it failed to contextualize various emigrant investments in their host territory and relate them to evolving exilic projects and failures of the counter-revolution. The emigrant settlement must be thought of in terms of emergency, resignation and innovation. This chapter looks into the evolution of the relationship between territorial distance and the emigrant project, the varying significance of emigrant renting and buying practices, and the implications behind emigrant journeys in their host territory.
