Amateur Musical Societies and Sports Clubs in Provincial France, 1848-1914

Abstract

A meticulous reconstruction of the historical development and geographical distribution of sports clubs in France as a whole between 1848 and 1914 is followed by a forensic analysis of the aims, membership and organisation of sports clubs. The entire range of sports clubs is covered but Baker focuses principally on shooting, gymnastic and cycling clubs. Both the creation and the operation of sports clubs were disrupted by personal and ideological differences. Within each club a spirit of fraternity was created by its code of discipline and regulations, by the distinctive attire and insignia that members were required to wear, and by the sociability that members enjoyed at their club house, often a café. Like musical societies, sports clubs animated the social lives of their towns and villages, contributing notably to their celebrations of national, regional and local fêtes.
