Abstract
The question of post-earthquake reconstruction in Italy has become, unfortunately, highly topical in recent years: after earthquakes in the Marche and Molise regions, the major quake of 2009 basically destroyed entire smaller historic towns and the whole city of L’Aquila with its large historic center and rich heritage. The fundamental question is whether reconstruction of buildings can reject the anachronistic slogan of “where it was and as it was” while balancing the needs to restart socio-economic dynamics and to respect social fabric and building traditions. The research presented here was a rare opportunity for integrated management of the process, in which researchers were able to share responsibilities and operation of both major phases of the project process. In particular, Montebello di Bertona, in the Abruzzo region, was one of seven municipalities included in a Research Project that was structured as an important survey but also as an integrated process leading from the survey to the project.

The two theories, partially opposing, of the development of form in nature - selective evolution for Darwin and growth math for Thompson - have repeatedly been applied as a metaphor for urban growth mechanisms, especially in those suburban contexts that often developed unplanned. The process that is described below is the result of research conducted by a particularly structured team that worked between 2011 and 2012 on the preparation of the Reconstruction Plans for Homogeneous Area 5, in the area most affected by the earthquake which struck L'Aquila in 2009, for the following municipalities: Brittoli, Bussi sul Tirino, Civitella Casanova, Cugnoli, Montebello di Bertona, Popoli, Ofena. Below are the credits for work carried out for the town of Montebello di Bertona (PE). Contracting authority: Regione Abruzzo. STM: Gaetano Fontana. Implementation Manager: Marcellino Maria Chella. RUP: Angelo Melchiorre, Franco Visconti. Scientific Director: Alberto Clementi. Responsible for Reconstruction Plan: Valentina Carpitella (first fase), Salvatore Colletti, Michela Giammarini. Responsible for Pilot Project: Livio Sacchi, Alessandro Luigini. Responsible for Survey: Livio Sacchi, Caterina Palestini e Giovanni Mataloni con Alessandro Luigini.
