Abstract

Dredger underscores the attempts of the new Austro-Hungarian high command to reform the military in response to defeat in the Austro-Prussian War. During the late 1860s and 1870s, Archduke Albrecht, victor of the battle of Custozza against Italy in 1866, and other reformers strove to procure breech-loading rifles and implement reasonable regulations that combined the defensive with the offensive. Reforms also took place in officer training, although the problem of transferring theory into practice remained. Imprudent spending decisions continued to stunt military progress and internal rivalry delayed the reform process.
