The use of ultrasound in pregnancy has increased immensely since it was first used during pregnancy in the 1960s. Elements of each type of ultrasound are clearly defined, and following these protocols with consistency is part of good clinical care. Diagnostic ultrasonography appears to be safe during pregnancy; however, ultrasound use for entertainment is discouraged .
