Abstract

Radionuclides useful in nuclear medicine are produced in cyclotron and reactors. In this chapter, operational features of these units and how radionuclides are produced using them have been described in detail. The targetry, production, separation, and decay characteristics of many clinically useful radionuclides are discussed in the text and presented in a table. The equation for the calculation of yield of radioactivity after irradiation using various pertinent parameters such as particle flux, number of target atoms, probability of nuclear reaction (cross-section σ), and duration of bombardment is given and some examples of yield calculation are provided. The importance of specific activity in nuclear medicine studies is highlighted. Questions relevant to the features of the cyclotron and the reactor and the production of radionuclides are provided for self-assessment of the understanding of the material. Presentation is appropriately referenced.
