Abstract
This chapter presents the possibility of a faith-based response that is not in conflict with refraining from the use of corporal punishment. The hermeneutical triad of sacred text, tradition, and reason is introduced. The long tradition of using this method of interpretation is discussed. This chapter addresses the first part of the triad, and the redemptive-movement hermeneutic suggested by William Webb is introduced. By using this interpretative method, a progressive movement in the sacred texts can be traced which moves away from the harsh corporal punishment advocated in the Old Testament. The chapter also includes a brief look at the language of the texts related to corporal punishment. The chapter concludes with a glance at the changing religious perceptions of both God and children in contemporary times.
