Abstract
Since the mid-1800s, Western culture has increasingly drawn back from the use of corporal punishment in most areas of lifeāfor instance, in the military, in prisons, and between spouses. However, physical violence, in the form of corporal punishment, against the most vulnerable in society, children, has stubbornly endured. While corporal punishment has been abolished in schools in all European countries, the US lags behind, with no federal legislation, and 19 states still allowing the practice. Of these 19, five states account for more than half the incidences of corporal punishment.
