Abstract

An ontology forms the basis of a knowledge representation of a system within restricted domain. It provides a vocabulary that refers to concepts in a domain, and determines relationships between concepts that can be shared and reused among intelligent systems. In this paper we describe a collaborative approach to ontology development that distinguishes a domain ontology and an application ontology building stages. The approach has been designed and used while working on building a synchrotron ontology. Presenting the approach as a business process model gives the possibility to identify business activities and actions that an enterprise must perform in order to build an ontology. The model can be integrated with the activities and processes related with software development such as documentation, requirements specification or component reuse.
