Abstract

The chapter covers the turmoil engulfing Korea from September 2016 until the Spring 2017, focusing on the outbreak of the ‘Choi soon-sil gate’ that led to the arrest of Samsung’s vice-chairman and, crucially, the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye and her removal from office. Triggered by the specifics of the scandal, but with roots in the deepening of polarization in society and the widening socio-economic inequalities, sustained peaceful mass protests brought about substantive political change. Demands for economic democratization are bound to continue.
