Testing Times: What Is the Role of Assessment?

Abstract

This chapter presents a series of case studies exploring the problematics of assessment and how this can alienate students, cause disruption and ultimately undermine learning. There is one major case study, followed by five brief encounters where classes were alienated from the assessment process. The first section is an auto-ethnographic, self-reflective study based on a one-to-one encounter with a very challenging individual on an Access course and a series of strategies for getting him through a demanding assessment programme.
