Abstract
In this introductory chapter, the importance of data converters, ADCs and DACs, for digital circuits is presented. A comparison is made between the two types of data converters, Nyquist rate converters and oversampling converters, with the focus on oversampling converters, by presenting some of their development history and highlighting their rise in popularity. The Sigma Delta modulators, whose design is described in this book, are briefly introduced by presenting their proposed characteristics, expected performance, and presenting some areas where they can be applied. In the end, an overview of all the chapters that compose this book is given.
