Abstract
This study about multi-faceted images of King Dingane prior to the 1994 democratic dispensation in South Africa‚ showcases both the intellectual history of Africans and the nature of history in racially divided societies such as South Africa. Furthermore, the study highlights the point that in such divided societies it is important to place the racially oppressed majority as subjects, not objects, of analysis in order to democratise historical knowledge and build a democratic South Africa against a background of political repression and resistance. By placing the oppressed majority at the centre of analysis, such a study challenges the pervasive belief that the oppressed majority are inferior in all respects when compared to the white minority.
