Abstract

Reimi Maki is brought to the pediatric clinic by her mother for her school checkup. Reimi weighs 37.76 kilo (83.25 pounds), and stands 148.7 cm tall (58.5 in.), putting her in the 5th percentile. Her BMI is 17.1, or the 12th percentile for BMI. Her blood pressure is 106/63. Her tanner stage is 3. Her mother was born in Japan but the family moved to the USA when Mrs. Maki was 4. They live in a major city where Japanese food and supplies are available. Mrs. Maki has become aware of some disturbing issues in Reimi’s school such as use of pornography and teen suicides. She sees that Reimi is not sharing as much information about her activities with her mother as she used to. Mrs. Maki believes in strict control of her daughter at this age and is disturbed by the pressures from school friends. Reimi has many responsibilities besides her school work. She is expected to practice her violin for an hour every evening and to study her parent’s language in addition to another language in school.
