Abstract
Ten-year-old Pat Masca is brought by his grandfather to the Indian Reservation’s pediatric clinic for his annual physical. His father is working on an oil rig. Pat’s mother is a domestic helper in the nearby town. Pat weighs 31.4 kg (69.25 pounds), and stands 137.5 cm (54.25 in.) tall, putting him in the 50th percentile for weight and height. His BMI is 16.6 (45th percentile). His blood pressure is 102/61. His tanner stage is 1. Pat’s grandfather is concerned about the way Pat rides his bike in the street. Pat doesn’t like wearing a helmet, and recently someone else on the reservation had a serious bike accident. His grandfather also sees other children using alcohol and drugs and he wants to know how to talk to his grandson about it before Pat is tempted to try this. Pat also sees other kids about his age smoking. His grandfather also thinks it is time to talk about becoming a man and the changes that are taking place in Pat’s body.
