Abstract
Letizia Bellocchio, “Motherhood and Italian Family Law in Francesca Comencini’s movies.” In this chapter, Bellocchio explores Francesca Comencini’s artistic and political representation of motherhood and its displacement in I Like to Work—Mobbing (Mi piace lavorare—Mobbing, 2004), Our Country (A casa nostra, 2006) and The White Space (Lo spazio bianco, 2009). Focusing on a family model no longer tied to wedlock and highly aware of its diversity and its rights, the essay draws attention to loopholes in Italian law, showing how Comencini’s artistic work takes part in current political debates on single mothers. Bellocchio concludes with a case study on The White Space, analyzing how the film contributes to a major reform of the Family Law, which established in 2014 that all children have the same legal status, whether born within the institution of marriage or out of it.
