Abstract

Alzheimer’s is a neurological disease, which slowly diminishes the cognitive functions of those who suffer from it, leaving them unable to fully care for themselves. In this project we aim at providing an automated, non-intrusive, and effective solution for patients diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s as well as ease of mind to their caregiver. Through this assistive platform, time and vicinity based pre-recorded instructions by the caregiver on how to employ certain home appliances are played out upon detection of the patient’s presence in the vicinity of the appliances. A log of the time and the kind of patient’s activity is reported back to the caregiver for their reference. In addition, the system will be used to monitor and track the location of the patient which can be used by the caregiver for assessment purposes. Upon completion, this project will significantly reduce the cost associated with assisted living, as it will replace numerous expensive devices on the market and drastically improve the quality of life for both the caregivers and the patients suffering from Dementia internationally.
