Network Embeddedness

Abstract

Ratajczak-Mrozek offers the informatory description and systematization of the concepts and typologies of embeddedness from three perspectives: social, interorganizational network and territorial. Social embeddedness (societal embeddedness) is based on works from Polanyi and Granovetter and refers to social conditions of economic behavior and the impact of personal relationships on companies’ activities. Interorganizational network embeddedness emphasizes the impact of interorganizational or business relationships on a company’s behavior, outcomes and performance. Territorial embeddedness refers to the spatial scope of embeddedness, thus, it can concern both types of relationships: social and interorganizational. After systematizing the theory, including classifications and operationalization of embeddedness, Ratajczak-Mrozek proposes a typology of embeddedness. The typology includes a conceptual framework for measuring the degree of embeddedness, including adaptation, mutuality, and trust.
