  • First Online:

Abstract

Ratajczak-Mrozek offers a summarizing description of two main approaches in the network theory , namely the IMP network approach and the strategic approach to networks. The chapter starts with the systematization of the concept of business network (industrial network ) in accordance with the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing Group (IMP Group). It focuses on characteristics of the network including continuous interaction , interdependence and the perception of the boundary between the company and its environment . The second analyzed approach to networks is the concept of strategic network (value net). The chapter presents the main characteristics of the flagship firm and intentionally created network. The chapter finishes with the informative comparison of both network approaches in terms of strategy development , relationship management , competition and performance of companies embedded in a network.
