Abstract
This chapter emphasizes the queens’ impact on political and diplomatic matters. Much of the historical understanding of how they performed their roles depends on diplomatic dispatches. First, this chapter challenges the traditional negative interpretations of the diplomats’ comments concerning Elizabeth of York and Anne Boleyn ; it then provides a revisionist view to the received wisdom that has led to inaccurate assumptions about their reigns. Finally, it explores the significant ways in which the other Tudor queens demonstrated their political abilities: Katherine of Aragon’s diplomatic service for her father, the traditional intercessory roles , the regencies of Katherine of Aragon and Katherine Parr , the queens’ influence on religious reform and publications, and their patronage of prelates.
