Abstract

While integration is increasingly perceived as a major problem, it does not depend solely on destination societies and their approaches. As recognised at academic and political levels, origin states can potentially have a major impact on shaping the integration trajectories of their emigrants living abroad. This volume provides factual evidence on the link between origin determinants and integration outcomes by using migrant corridors as units of analysis. Accordingly, different migrant corridors are systematically compared within and between states on a wide range of integration dimensions, namely labour market, education and access to citizenship. In some cases, other dimensions were considered, including residential integration, social inclusion, political participation, language, etc. In terms of origin determinants, we considered the role of diaspora and emigration policies, ties between migrants and origin states and non-state-actor engagement. All these were found to have a differentiated impact according to the dimension of integration.
