Abstract

Although the concept of tenure is relatively recent, the notion of providing university faculty with job security dates back to the Holy Roman Empire. As higher education in Europe moved toward secularism, issues such as faculty self-government and job security arose. These ideas from Europe affected the growth of universities in America and, as the American Westward Expansion progressed and institutions were established, faculty job protection became an increasing area of interest, ultimately leading to the formation of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).
