Abstract

The executive managers of a hospital need to be reassured that the healthcare workforce is not only clinically competent to deliver safe and effective services to patients, but to be equally reassured that there is standardisation in non-clinical competencies in leadership and management and quality improvement. Adding to this complexity is a continued shortage of specific specialties in medicine, nursing and AHPs which presents the dual challenge of professionals seeking more autonomy in practice to defend their professional role while placing healthcare systems under extreme pressure resulting in the closure of some services and depleted resources in others. Never before has there been such a need for an investment in an innovative and creative solution to the global healthcare workforce crisis. This chapter will outline the complex context of the policy changes affecting the employment of drs in healthcare in the UK and argue that a future workforce solution must include the development of core international healthcare competencies that define the delivery of quality of care for patients.
