Abstract
In this chapter Arafat analyzes how Morsi’s policies targeted Mubarak’s ‘deep state ,’ which included the judiciary , proletarians, Al-Azhar, the military , the interior ministry , and the media (including journalists ). He also explores Morsi’s policies regarding the Salafist Call . This chapter additionally examines how Morsi was able to cause almost all segments of Egyptian society, with the exception of jihadist groups , to rally against his rule. Practically all those who voted for him ended up moving into the opposition camp. ‘Morsi, Mubarak Deep State, and Salafist Call’ concludes that the MB’s deep-rooted enmity toward Mubarak’s deep-state pillars was the major reason for the ousting of the MB and Morsi. Additionally, the MB’s disputes with the Salafist Call, another Islamist group, helped negate the MB’s claims that they were being persecuted based on religion and gave the Egyptian people the moral justification to remove Morsi and the MB from power.
