Endovascular and Surgical Therapy of Thoracic and Thoraco-Abdominal Disease of the Aorta

Chapter

Abstract

Diseases of the thoracic and thoracoabdominal aorta are a leading cause of death. The natural history, indications for treatment, and the results with open surgical therapy for treatment of aortic disease utilizing modern adjuncts including distal aortic perfusion and cerebrospinal fluid drainage are reviewed in this chapter. Thoracic endovascular repair for the treatment of acute aortic disease including aneurysms, acute and chronic dissections, intramural hematomas, and traumatic aortic injury is evaluated in detail. The use of hybrid surgical and endovascular techniques in addition to fenestrated and branched stent grafts to treat complex pathology in the aortic arch and thoraco-abdominal aorta is also discussed.
