Abstract

Intracranial venous intervention is an evolving area of endovascular surgical neuroradiology with combined diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Since Higgins et al. first reported the venous sinus stenting in 2002, there have been only a few prospective and retrospective trials published in the literature. Over the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in the diagnostic and interventional procedures of the intracranial venous system, providing better understanding of the pathophysiology and effective alternate therapeutic options for challenging pathology such as refractory idiopathic intracranial hypertension and intractable pulsatile tinnitus. The anatomic and physiological roles of intravascular ultrasound and venous manometry, respectively, have significantly improved our understanding in the challenging diagnosis of venous sinus stenosis.

In this chapter, we briefly discuss the fundamental cerebral venous anatomy and intracranial venous interventions under specific diagnostic and therapeutic categories.
