Abstract

The management and quality of rectal cancer treatment has evolved in the last few decades. Most recent developments in this field have been technical through the use of laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques. Whilst the benefit of laparoscopic surgery for colonic cancer has been proven there remains some controversy about it’s use in surgery for mid and low rectal cancers that require total mesorectal excision. In recent years transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) has been described which appears to circumnavigate some of the technical difficulties of laparoscopic mobilisation of the low rectum. This chapter describes indications, technical considerations and early outcome data about transanal TME.
